This is definitely not a ‘news’ blog. I leave news facts to other people. Although there’s not much news on Genesis these days, sometimes something happens that makes my heart skip a beat. It’s no secret that I’m a huge Phil Collins fan and I would fly the flag if he would release a new album. It’s just been too long…
But I’m as skeptical as I’m hopeful. Phil Collins surprised everyone with his Not Dead Yet Tour in 2017-2019 and his return with Genesis in 2020. After playing live to that degree one might wonder what the future holds. Collins hasn’t released any new material since his Motown covers album ‘Going Back’ in 2010.
What is Phil Collins up to these days? A recent Facebook post from music producer Simon Napier-Bell suggests Phil Collins is working on new music. Napier-Bell interviewed Collins at his home in Switserland in August for a documentary about The Marque, the iconic London-based concert venue, where Genesis performed many times at the start of their career. He mentioned in his post that Phil Collins recently revamped his studio and that “for sure, before too long we’re going to hear some new music.”
Several websites picked up the news like NME and Virgin Radio UK. Collins making new music only existed in a utopia… Untill now. ‘Everything Phil Collins’ took it further and asked manager Tony Smith what to expect. His reply was plain and simple: “No plans for new music.” I suppose Tony Smith is a man of integrity who can keep a secret.
Recently, I stumbled upon a printed article about Phil Collins/Genesis and their 1983 hit ‘Mama’. The article ends with the sentence “…Phil is back in the studio which is very promising.” Although it’s there in black and white it doesn’t mean a thing. For now, we can only wait and wonder.
