CALLING ALL POSTERS: Collectors’ Lot
by George German
(introduction by ahand83)
Being fond of great looking Genesis posters I’ve put most of what I have onto this website. Some of the posters you may see came from the late Mick Surtees who had a phenomenal collection. Through Mick I got in touch with George German from Baltimore, Maryland USA, who’s a great collector of posters. He probably has the largest Genesis poster collection in the world. George has his own chapter in the Genesis Museum ‘Collectors Exhibit’ book that was published in 2023.
Now, he wrote a few words about his collection for this website. I swapped a few posters with George and I enjoyed our correspondence. You might say George is not necessarily after a new stack of posters but he’s more into friendship and shared interests. I sent some of my posters to George which he scanned for his book and I had them returned in perfect condition a few weeks later.
It all started for this 15-year old boy just after Christmas 1986. I found out that Genesis was going to be playing at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland on January 29, 1987. I went to the local mall to buy a ticket at the TicketMaster outlet. When I got to the ticket booth, I was informed that the concert was sold out. After receiving the bad news, I decided to go to a record store located within the mall. While there, I started to page through the posters they had for sale. I saw a Genesis ‘Invisible Touch’ poster and decided to buy it as I wasn’t able to get a concert ticket.
I figured that a Genesis poster would be the next best thing. That was my first Genesis poster. Little did I know that I’d still be buying Genesis posters 38 years later. Since then, I’ve increased my collection to approximately 2,200 Genesis (and solo) posters. I don’t have every poster known to exist, but I certainly have a lot.
With my passion for posters, I’ve started working on a book to showcase Genesis, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett and Mike & The Mechanics posters. If you have any posters in your collection, I’d love to see what you have. If it’s a poster I don’t have, I’d love to be able to include it in the book. Drop me a line and we can talk.
