Genesis in the tub? Back in the 80s and 90s there weren’t as many high end concert venues as today. In The Netherlands now we have several of which the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam probably is the best known. Genesis played there two nights in 2022 during The Last Domino Tour. Back in 1987, at the peak of their fame, the band played De Kuip in Rotterdam, a football stadium with a capacity of 50.000. ‘De Kuip’ can literally be translated as ‘The Tub’, so there you have it. Lots of big names played at De Kuip like Bowie, Clapton, Springsteen, Michael Jackson and Dire Straits among others. In the summer of 1992 Genesis returned to De Kuip for their We Can’t Dance Tour.
The 1987 gig was a memorable one because of the behaviour of some Dutch fans, pushing their way forward in the audience and fighting. Phil Collins left the stage at that point to return when matters were solved. There’s a more detailed report about the concert on the net. Please click here.
I have a photo taken inside De Kuip of a remembrance wall with all the artists that played the stadium and the dates they were on. Somehow there are two dates penned down for Genesis in 1988 which ofcourse must be a mistake. The ’92 gig was marked as Genesis’ last performance in The Netherlands untill their comeback in 2007. Reviews were mostly good, going from ‘A slow start for Genesis’ to ‘Technical perfection’ and ‘Phil Collins, master of entertainment’.
Over the years I collected many cuttings, concert tickets and memorabilia of both concerts at De Kuip. I believe I have all the different ticket stubs that were available from arena/ground to V.I.P. tickets. I even have a letter from Volkswagen to one of their retailers about the ’92 concert, with free tickets and information on how to get there. It’s all in the gallery. Please go check it out.
